WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Influenza vaccination prevents respiratory illness in a significant number of elderly nursing home residents, justifying the longstanding recommendation that all nursing home residents be vaccinated, according to a report in the July 17th issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Over 3 years, Dr. Arnold S. Monto, from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and colleagues collected data on patients 65 years of age and older in 83 nursing homes in southern Lower Michigan.

The researchers found that influenza vaccination was 33% effective in preventing influenza-like illness and clinically diagnosed pneumonia. In preventing pneumonia alone, it was 43% effective. When they considered only the period of peak influenza activity, the estimate of the prevention of pneumonia increased to 55%.

Dr. Monto and colleagues recommend that vaccination of nursing home residents "should be supported and extended to prevent introduction of influenza through vaccination of nursing home staff and appropriate use of antivirals, including the new neuraminidase inhibitors, either as adjuncts to vaccine or to terminate outbreaks once they begin."
