התערבות טיפולית בשלבים המוקדמים של סכיזופרניה, יכולה להביא להתמעטות, דחייה ואפילו למניעת הופעת סימנים פסיכוטיים בחולים מסוימים. יחד עם זאת קשה לזהות סימנים ראשוניים (פרודרומלים) מכיוון שהם לא ספציפיים.

קבוצת חוקרים אוסטרלים בראשות Alison Yung and Patrick McGorry אשר מזה שנים מנהלים סדרת מחקרים פרוספקטיבים איכותיים (בעבר אנחנו כבר סקרנו חלק מעבודתם ונחזור לכך עוד בהמשך ה’ ע’) מ- University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia , הצליחו לזהות מספר גורמים מנבאים של התפתחות הפסיכוזה במהלך התקופה הפרודרומלית.

במשך שנה  עקבו החוקרים אחרי קבוצה גדולה של אנשים צעירים בעלי סיכון גבוה להתפתחות הפסיכוזה: אנשים עם סיפור משפחתי של הפרעות פסיכוטיות,  עם סימנים פסיכוטיים תת-קליניים, הפרעות סכיזוטיפאליות וכדומה.

במהלך תקופת המחקר (12 חודשים), 40.8% מהנבדקים פיתחו הפרעות פסיכוטיות ברורות ובולטות. בכ80% מהם החוקרים זיהו 4 או יותר מהגורמים המנבאים התפתחות פסיכוזה.

בהמשך, דרך הערכת הסיכון היחסי של שילוב מספר גורמים מנבאים ביחד, החוקרים היו מסוגלים להצביע על אותן תכונות , אשר לדעתם, באופן מובהק, (a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 91% ) מנבאים את התפתחות הפסיכוזה במהלך החודשים הקרובים.

לפי מימצאיהם, הגורמים המנבאים את התפתחות הפסיכוזה הם:

זמן ממושך של סימנים ראשוניים (פרודרומלים)

 תפקוד פסיכוסוציאלי ירוד

 נוכחות סימנים פסיכוטיים תת-קליניים

 דיכאון וחוסר אירגון.

“זיהוי מדויק, כמעט וודאי של שילוב גורמים המנבאים התפתחות הפסיכוזה,”- טוענים החוקרים במאמר שפורסם במהדורות האחרונה של Schizophrenia Research “מאפשר תחילת פעילות טיפולית מכוונת ומוקדמת אשר תצמצם את הנזק ויתכן כי תדחה או תמנע את הופעת המחלה”.
