Cannabis use which begins in adolescence is associated with an increased risk of subsequent schizophrenia, finds separate research among cohorts in Sweden and New Zealand.
This causal risk association “is not explained by sociability personality traits, or by use of amphetamines or other drugs,” declares a team of researchers from Gothenburg University and Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, Wales.
“Self medication with cannabis is an unlikely explanation for the association observed.” Because arguments were raised against their original findings of an association between adolescent cannabis use and subsequent risk of schizophrenia, researchers reanalyzed data on self-reported cannabis use by a cohort of Swedish conscripts.
This included lager hospital admissions for schizophrenia and other psychoses.
