One in five patients admitted to hospital in the UK for treatment of severe mental health problems is prescribed antipsychotic drugs in excess of official guidelines, often without being informed or properly monitored, a new survey reveals.
These results came from a 1-day audit of more than 3000 patients, carried out on behalf of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ research unit. The aim was to establish how prescribing patterns compared with national recommendations.
