Transdermal selegiline appears to be an effective, well-tolerated treatment for adult outpatients with major depression, according to a report published in the November issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. Moreover, this formulation does not produce the side effects often seen with other monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.
Although MAO inhibitors are often more effective than other agents in treating depression, their use has been limited because they tend to interfere with tyramine metabolism, the authors note in the introduction to their report. Because of this, patients taking MAO inhibitors are advised to avoid foods that contain tyramine.
