Men and Women Respond Similarly to Most Antidepressants

Men and women with depression demonstrate similar response rates when treated with tricyclic antidepressants or fluoxetine, according to a recent report. Although the response to monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) among women was better than that seen among men, the difference does not appear to be clinically relevant.

To determine the effect of gender on antidepressant responses, Dr. Frederic M. Quitkin, from New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York, and colleagues analyzed data from 9 studies involving a total of 1746 patients who were treated with tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs, fluoxetine, or placebo for depression.
