Number of Cases of Probable Transfusion-Related West Nile Virus Stands at 33

Seventeen states have reported a total of 33 cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection among persons who had received blood components in the month prior to illness onset, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the CDC’s report in a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report Dispatch for October 28, a total of 47 cases were reported to the CDC between August 28 and October 26. In 14 cases, it was demonstrated either that WNV was the incorrect diagnosis or that the infection was not acquired through transfusion.
