Lower Incidence of Tics with Once-Daily Methylphenidate in Children with ADHD

Once-a-day dosing with the OROS® formulation of methylphenidate (MPH) had minimal impact on tics in a study of children with ADHD.

 Donna R. Palumbo, PhD, of the University of Rochester, in Rochester, New York, presented this finding here October 20 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

 Conventional MPH has a relatively short plasma half-life, which means that it is typically administered three times a day to maintain efficacy. Multiple dosing may lead to problems of non-compliance.

 Tics, a frequent side effect in children with ADHD taking MPH, can lead to non-compliance in children due to social stigma — especially within a peer-group environment such as school. The OROS® formulation of MPH (OROS® MPH) is a once-daily formulation designed to provide effective control of ADHD symptoms through a 12-hour time span.
