HCV Testing, Counseling Have Little Impact on Risky Behavior Among Drug Users

Young injection drug users (IDUs) who learn they are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) continue to engage in risky behaviors associated with HCV transmission. That’s according to a report in the October 1st issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases. Dr. Steffanie A. Strathdee of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and colleagues assessed changes in the frequencies of high-risk behavior among 106 IDUs who received semiannual HIV and HCV testing, with pre- and post-test counseling.

Forty-six subjects tested positive for HCV and were informed of this result, while the remaining 60 either did not have a positive HCV test or were unaware of their test result. Overall, neither group reported significant
