European researchers find that Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s wort) extract is more effective than placebo for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate major depression.
Dr. Lecrubier of H pital Piti Salp tri re in Paris and colleagues recruited patients seeking treatment from one of 26 clinical centers in France for depression. Subjects’ Hamilton depression scale scores were between 18 and 25.
The study drug was a hydroalcoholic extract with standardized contents of 3% – 6% hyperforin and 0.12% – 0.28% hypericin. As reported in the American Journal of Psychiatry for August, 186 patients were randomly assigned to treatment with Hypericum and 189 to treatment with placebo. Per-protocol analysis included 164 patients in the treatment group and 157 in the placebo group.
