Behavior such as aggression, defiance and property destruction associated with subaverage IQs in children responds well to risperidone therapy, according to the results of a randomized trial.
Dr. Michael Aman from Ohio State University, Columbus, and colleagues randomly assigned 110 children, 5 to 12 years of age to treatment with the atypical antipsychotic at a mean dose of 0.98 mg/kg daily for 6 weeks, or to placebo.
These children had IQs that ranged from 36 to 84 and had a distributive behavior disorder. The researchers rated the children on the Nisonger Child Behavior Rating Form (NCBRF), the Aberrant Behavior Checklist, Behavior Problems inventory, Clinical Global Impressions, modified California Verbal Learning Test and on a continuous performance task.
