No Link Found Between Thyroid Dysfunction and Depression or Anxiety

There appears to be no association between abnormal thyroid function and either depression or anxiety disorder.

Dr. Anne Engum, at the Innherred Hospital, in Levanger, Norway, and colleagues looked for associations between thyroid dysfunction and depression or anxiety disorder in more than 30,000 men and women, aged 40 to 89 years, who are part of the Norwegian Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT).

All subjects had thyroid assays and were evaluated for depression and anxiety using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The subjects were divided into six categories depending on their thyroid function. A logistical regression analysis was performed to identify associations, the researchers reported.

The group with biochemical hypothyroidism had significantly lower risk for depression and anxiety compared with the group with normal thyroid function.
