High Risk of Psychiatric Ills in Children Adopted from Another Country

Severe psychiatric problems and compromised long-term development are prominent among children who are adopted from other countries and brought up in Sweden. Health professionals must be made aware of a high risk of suicide in this population, warn Dr. Anders Hjern and colleagues at the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare, Stockholm, Sweden.

The mental health and social adjustment of children adopted from other countries who are now adolescents and young adults, is an important issue in Western Europe and the United States, the researchers point out.

In Sweden, adoption of children born abroad became common in the late 1960s because of a shortage of Swedish children available for adoption. Some 40,000 foreign-born children have been adopted, mainly from Korea, India, and Colombia.
