Depressive Symptoms in Elderly Linked to Increased Alzheimer’s Disease Risk

Elderly patients who have symptoms of depression appear to be at an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to a report in the August issue of Neurology.

“According to our results, the people with the largest number of depressive symptoms also had the greatest risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” Dr. Robert S. Wilson from the Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, said in a press statement.

Dr. Wilson and colleagues collected data on 651 US Catholic priests and nuns, 65 years of age and older, who participated in the Religious Orders Study and were assessed at baseline for the number of depressive symptoms using the modified 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D).
