The acetylcholinesterase inhibitor donepezil, which improves symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, also appears to have the same beneficial effect in Down’s syndrome-associated dementia.
In a study of nine patients with Down’s syndrome with dementia, who were treated with donepezil, eight showed improvement after 5 months, compared with six matched, untreated controls, Dr. Ira T. Lott and colleagues at the University of California at Irvine report in the July issue of the Archives of Neurology.
