NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 17 –
Consumption of foods and supplements containing vitamin E may help slow the decline in mental functioning that occurs with age, according to the results of a study.
“High amounts of vitamin E from foods appears to be protective [against] cognitive decline,” lead author Dr. Martha Clare Morris, from Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, told Reuters Health.
The researchers theorized that vitamin E, an antioxidant, may counteract the damage done to brain cells by free radicals. Previous research has suggested that people who consume high levels of vitamin E retain mental function and are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
