LONDON (Reuters Health) Jul 02 –
Cultivation of opium poppies for use in producing pharmaceuticals like codeine and morphine will take place for the first time in the UK, the government said on Tuesday. After small-scale trials were deemed successful last year, 400 hectares of opium poppies are being grown, all of which will be used by a licensed opiate manufacturer in Scotland, the Home Office said. The UK pharmaceutical industry has been dependent on imported opium supplies from countries such as Australia, India, Turkey and Spain, leaving it vulnerable to “seasonal and
market fluctuations,” the Home Office said.
