– Thioridazine-induced arrhythmia appears to be the cause of some sudden unexplained deaths among psychiatric in-patients, UK researchers report in the June issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry.
Dr. Simon H. L. Thomas from the University of Newcastle, and colleagues performed a
case-control study comparing psychiatric in-patients who died suddenly with matched controls in five hospitals in the northeast of England.
The researchers identified 69 case-control clusters. Sudden unexplained deaths were associated with hypertension, ischemic heart disease and thioridazine treatment (adjusted odds ratio for thioridazine 5.3, p=0.004), Dr. Thomas’s team found.
