IM Ziprasidone as Good or Better than Haloperidol for Psychiatric Emergencies


PHILADELPHIA, PA — May 23, 2002 —

 The new antipsychotic ziprasidone is as good or better than haloperidol for managing the important symptoms associated with psychiatric emergencies.

 Ziprasidone effectively reduced both agitation and psychotic symptoms in schizophrenic patients in an emergency settings and was associated with a reduced risk of movement disorder side effects, in an open-label study of over 500 patients presenting with schizophrenic symptoms in an emergency setting treated either with intramuscular ziprasidone or intramuscular haloperidol.

This study was presented here this week at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Those given ziprasidone had comparable improvements in agitation and greater improvements in psychotic symptoms than those given haloperidol. The research was led by David G. Daniel, MD, clinical professor of psychiatry at George Washington University in Washington, DC, United States.
