The Journal Of Clinical Psychiatry Reports Escitalopram Effective And Well Tolerated

OMAHA, NE — APRIL 26, 2002 — This month's Journal of Clinical Psychiatry features study results that show the investigational selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram was effective in treating patients with major depressive disorder at a fixed dose. Escitalopram, the single-active isomer of Celexa (citalopram HBr), at 10 mg/day and 20 mg/day demonstrated greater improvement relative to placebo. Escitalopram showed consistent antidepressant effect across all efficacy measures at 10 mg/day, a lower dose than currently indicated for any other antidepressant of the SSRI class. In addition, this effective dose was exceptionally well tolerated.

"Based on the data, escitalopram was shown to be effective and well tolerated at a starting dose of 10mg/day, which is the lowest dosage of any other SSRI currently available. This may help reduce patient discontinuation rates," said William Burke, MD, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical School and lead investigator of this study.
