In a series of patients referred for evaluation of possible pediatric bone sarcoma, positron emission tomography (PET) detected metastases missed by both computed tomography (CT) and technetium bone scan, according to investigators from the University of North Carolina (UNC), Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
PET detected metastases in 10 (29%) of 35 of these patients at initial staging. In 7 (70%) of the 10 patients, nonpulmonary metastases were found which were not detected by CT. Additionally, six were bony [metastases] that were not detected by bone scan,” Dr. Johnson told attendees at his presentation
