Metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) with spacers were as efficacious as nebulized bronchodilators for emergency department treatment of wheezing in children aged two to 24 months, according to the results of a double-blind, randomized trial reported in the January issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
“MDIs have provided a quicker and more cost-effective way to deliver aerosolized bronchodilators for asthma treatment in older children and adults,” write Annette Delgado, MD, and colleagues from the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. “However, younger patients are often unable to coordinate inspiration with activation of the MDI, thereby limiting the amount of drug inhaled. The introduction of spacer devices has helped solve this problem.”
