HHS Allocates Funds for Pediatric Drug Testing

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said on Tuesday that it as much as $93 million has been earmarked to support the testing of certain prescription drugs in children over the next two fiscal years.

The government-sponsored testing is to be conducted under the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act, which was signed into law by President Bush last year. The legislation renewed the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ability to offer additional market exclusivity on patented drugs when the medicines are tested in children at its request, and it set aside government funds to support pediatric testing of off-patent drugs that are ineligible for the market exclusivity incentive.
