Combination of total thyroidectomy, modified radical neck dissection and iodine-131 ablation offers an effective treatment for children with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Researchers from the University Hospital Groningen, the Netherlands, retrospectively analysed 21 children with differentiated thyroid carcinoma;17 presented with papillary carcinoma, 3 with follicular carcinoma and 1 Hurthle cell carcinomas respectively. Patients underwent total thyroidectomy followed by radioiodine therapy.
Fifty two percent of children with cervical lymph node metastases underwent modified radical neck dissection. Three patients showed pulmonary metastases at diagnosis. Follow-up lasted from between 2 and 26 years, with a median of 11 years.
