Oil massage increases the fatty acid levels and improves growth in neonates, researchers reported last week at the 40th annual conference of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics in Mumbai (Bombay), India.
Dr. Manoj Matnani and colleagues from the KEM Hospital, Pune, in western India, evaluated the effect of oil massage on blood fatty acid levels of neonates. In a randomized study, 120 neonates were randomized to receive oil massage with safflower oil containing essential fatty acids, coconut oil containing saturated fatty acids or to placebo. Oil massage was carried out for 5 days at 6 hourly intervals using 5 mL of the oil. Blood levels of fatty acids were measured using gas chromatography prior to and on completion of the study.
