The offspring of fathers with type 2 diabetes tend to have lower birthweights than do the offspring of fathers without diabetes, British researchers report.
They also found that the same is true for the offspring of mothers who develop diabetes after an infant’s birth. These findings “support the hypothesis that common genetic factors contribute both to the risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes and decreased prenatal growth,” Dr. Elina Hyppnen’s group writes in the British Medical Journal for January 4.
