Combined biochemical and ultrasound screening in the second trimester is “substantially” more effective than either approach alone in identifying fetal Down syndrome, according to a report in the December issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Peter A. Benn, of the University of Connecticut, Farmington, and colleagues calculated the efficacy of combining second-trimester maternal serum testing and the ultrasound measures of nuchal fold thickness and proximal long bone length.
