Therapy with the beta-blocker carvedilol may make it possible for some children with severe chronic heart failure to be delisted for heart transplantation, according to the results of a randomized trial.
Dr. Estela Azeka and colleagues from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, Brazil, randomly assigned 22 consecutive patients, 3.2 months to 10 years of age, with advanced heart failure and left ventricular ejection fraction < 30% to carvedilol or placebo, in addition to standard therapy with digoxin, diuretics and ACE inhibitors.
