According to the results of a meta-analysis, intranasal corticosteroids are superior to topical antihistamines in controlling the nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, however both provide comparable relief of ocular symptoms.
Data from 648 subjects enrolled in a total of nine trials were included in the analysis. Compared with topical antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids produced a significantly greater improvement in total nasal symptoms, nasal blockage, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and itching. However, the effects on sneezing, rhinorrhea, and itching differed greatly among the trials studied.
