Results of a study published in the December issue of Pediatrics suggest that the use of ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) reduces rates of perforation and negative appendectomy in children with suspected appendicitis.
“In 1998, we implemented a clinical imaging protocol in which children with suspected appendicitis underwent US followed by CT,” Dr. Barbara M. Garcia Pena, of Miami Children’s Hospital, Florida, and colleagues note. “We sought to determine the impact of the US-CT protocol on changes in perforation and negative appendectomy rates.”
