Israel, the first country to adopt a universal hepatitis A immunization program for young children three years ago, experienced an abrupt overall reduction of the disease of more than 90%, according to new statistics reported here last week at the 3rd World Congress of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
Professor Ron Dagan of the Pediatrics Infectious Disease Unit at Soroka University Medical Center in Israel presented an update of the national figures on the disease. The annual incidence of hepatitis A dropped in the entire population from 41 cases per 100,000 people in 1995 to less than 5/100,000 in all age groups during the first quarter of 2002.
