Paediatric coverage of 7- and 11-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines depends on the age of the children and the disease, research from Germany indicates.
The same study indicates that there is only marginal additional benefit for pneumococcal meningitis with the 11-valent vaccines compared with the 7-valent vaccines.
“Coverage of 7- (11-valent) conjugate vaccines in children aged six months and older was age- and diagnosis-dependent,” explain investigators led by Dr. Rudiger Von Kries from Ludwig Maximilians Universitat in Munich. The range for 7-valent vaccines was from 10.5 percent to 78.3 percent for meningitis and from 13.6 percent to 75 percent for non-meningitis invasive disease cases.
For 11-valent vaccines, the range was 15.8 per cent to 82.6 percent for meningitis and from 68.2 percent to 89.3 percent for non-meningitis invasive disease cases.
