German clinicians have developed a new non-invasive ultrasound technique to measure blood flow to the brain of neonates.
Such monitoring of changes in volume of cerebral blood flow in ill neonates may “help to elucidate the pathogenesis of hypoxic-ischaemic brain damage,” declares Dr Martin Schöning and colleagues from University Children’s Hospital, Tübingen, Germany.
It could also become an important device to monitor the effect of neuroprotective measures. Alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) play an important role in the pathogenesis of ischaemic brain damage, thought to be one of the main causes of peri-ventricular brain lesions in preterm neonates, and of cortical and deep grey matter lesions in term neonates, the clinicians said. Such damage often results in developmental delay and spastic cerebral palsy.
