Single-dose azithromycin had been found to be as effective as 12 doses of erythromycin over three days for treatment of cholera among children.
Results are from a double-blind, randomized trial among 128 severely dehydrated children, between the ages of 1 and 15 years, who had cholera and were treated at treatment centres in Bangladesh by Dr Wasif Khan and colleagues at the International Centre For Diarrhoea Disease Research, Dhaka.
It was in collaboration with clinicians in Britain, South Africa and the United States. Cholera is a major global public-health problem, and the clinicians point out that the 4,908 deaths from the disease reported to the World Health Organization in 2001 are gross underestimates, since many countries under-report cases. In Bangladesh alone, an estimated two million or more people are infected with Vibrio cholerae annually.
