Mass screening in newborns for fatty acid beta-oxidation and related disorders (FAODs) could be an important step in preventing attacks and related effects, say Japanese researchers.
Investigators from the department of paediatrics at Shimane Medical University in Shimane also say the number of FAOD cases being diagnosed in Japan appears to be increasing, although the precise incidence is still unknown.
They surveyed 187 Japanese institutions treating patients with metabolic disorders. There were 64 patients with 10 types of FAODs. Two FAOD types were most common: carnitine palmitoyltranferase 2 deficiency (17 patients) and glutaric aciduria type 2 (14 patients).
