When a language barrier is present, non-English-speaking pediatric patients undergo more tests and incur higher medical expenses than their English-speaking peers, new study findings suggest.
However, bilingual healthcare providers or interpreters may help bring these costs down. Dr. Louis C. Hampers, from the Children’s Hospital in Denver, and Dr. Jennifer McNulty, from the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, evaluated various aspects of care for 4146 children who presented to the emergency room with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.
