From 1995 to 1998, rates of inappropriate antibiotic use for pediatric upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) decreased, according to a report published in the November issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. David R. Nash, from the University of Pittsburgh, and colleagues analyzed data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) to determine the antimicrobial prescribing patterns of physicians who provide care for children. The study was limited to NAMCS samples from 1995 to 1998. Data from a total of 13,078 patient visits were included in the analysis.
