In Austria, neither mercury nor lead are present in significant concentrations in breast milk, study results indicate.
In the November issue of the journal Pediatrics, Dr. Claudia Gundacker of the University of Vienna and colleagues note that exposure to mercury and lead may cause anemia and neurotoxic and nephrotoxic impairment in the susceptible infant. “Previous data on breast milk mercury and lead contents are sparse or missing for the Austrian population.”
