The prevalence of asthma among inner-city middle school children in the US may be much greater than current estimates, according to the results of a survey of Philadelphia schoolchildren.
“One out of four children told us they knew they had asthma,” said lead researcher Dr. Salvatore Mangione, an associate professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. “And as many as one out of three have symptoms suggestive of asthma. These are pretty high figures.” National statistics indicate that about 10% of US children have asthma, Dr. Mangione noted.
