Atest that rapidly detects Streptococcus pneumoniae antigen in the urine is highly accurate in identifying pneumococcal infection in children, according to a report published in the October issue of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
The assay, which can provide diagnostic results in just 15 minutes, is produced by Portland, Maine-based Binax, Inc. under the brand name NOW. The test was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1999, based largely on data from studies involving adult subjects. However, it was unclear if the test was also useful in pediatric populations.
