Peak serum vancomycin concentrations do not have to be measured in neonatal patients receiving standard doses of the drug.
Approximately 89 percent of infants treated in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) who demonstrate acceptable trough concentrations of the drug also have acceptable peak concentrations, British researchers report.
They defined the standard regimen as 15 milligrams per kilogram every 12 or 18 hours, depending on the infant’s post-natal age. Investigators from Addenbrooke’s National Health Service Trust in Cambridge conducted a retrospective study of 101 infants. Participants were admitted to one regional NICU. Enrolment excluded babies who had been started on vancomycin prior to NICU transfer.
