Full-term babies who are breastfed could have their own distinct plasma glucose levels and show no significant variation during the first three days of life, Indian researchers report. “Biochemical thresholds for hypoglycaemia do not seem to be of practical importance in asymptomatic, normal, term breastfed infants,” say investigators from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, Karnataka.
Two hundred 200 healthy, term infants appropriate in size for their gestational age were studied. All of the babies were breastfed exclusively.
The researchers evaluated the infants at three, six, 24 and 72 hours of life to analyse the influence of mode of delivery, parity and intervals between feedings on plasma glucose. Heel-prick capillary samples were used to estimate plasma glucose.
