Pediatricians Offer Advice on ‘Vaccine Hesitant’ Parents

Reports about vaccine safety, concerns over bioterrorism, and the sheer volume of childhood vaccines have left some parents confused about the risks and benefits of routine immunizations, researchers told members of the American Academy of Pediatrics here Saturday.

Doctors can best respond to the concerns of “vaccine hesitant” parents by trying to understand, respect, and address their “health belief systems,” said Edgar K Marcuse, MD, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Marcuse and Bruce Gellin, MD, the executive director of the National Network of Immunization Information, brought the audience up to date on the vaccine concerns of pediatricians, parents, and the public.

Interest in the standing-room-only session was so high, the doctors agreed to make their presentation twice. “It is confusing for parents,” said Dr. Gellin, who is also an adjunct assistant professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. “A number of parents have questions because the immunization process has gotten so much more complex. Carrying on a meaningful dialogue in the midst of a busy pediatric practice is a challenge.”
