Child/Parental Factors Both Influence Infant Self-Soothing Sleep/Wake Patterns

Infant and parental factors interact to influence the development of self-soothing sleep-wake patterns in children younger than one year of age.

Researchers from the University of California Davis Medical Centre in Sacramento  California, United States, looked at the longitudinal development of sleep-wake patterns of solitary-sleeping infants aged from one to 12 months.

They studied nighttime sleep-wake patterns and associated variables in 80 infants five times across the first year of life using both video somnography and parental questionnaires. Sleep/wake state developmental changes observed in research into infant sleep were also replicated.

The researchers point out there is a great deal of individual variability in the development of all sleep-related variables. Three variables were identified as significant predictors of self-soothing in 12-month old infants: decreasing amounts of time spent out of the crib across the first year, high levels of quiet sleep at birth and longer parental response times to infant awakenings at three months.
