For children with cystic fibrosis refractory to conventional treatment, UK physicians recommend a 4- to 6-month trial of azithromycin, according to their report in the September 28th issue of The Lancet.
The recommendation is based on their observation of a modest response in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in a placebo-controlled crossover trial. Dr. Mark Rosenthal and colleagues at Royal Brompton Hospital in London randomly assigned 41 patients, ages 8 to 18, to initial treatment with azithromycin or placebo for 6 months. Following a 2-month washout period, treatments were crossed over.
