On Monday, Germany announced it will begin the country’s largest and most thorough child and youth health survey, which will report on the condition of 20,000 young people over the next 3 years.
Health Minister Ulla Schmidt appeared at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin to launch the survey, which she hopes will provide the information needed to form “evidence-based prevention” health policies in the future.
A 12-month pilot study of nearly 2000 children has already given statisticians new ideas on how to get the most information from the various sources used, she said.
These include parental questionnaires, physical examination of children, urine and blood tests, as well as interviews with doctors.
The study, which will begin later this year, will be conducted in modules funded by different bodies and may be supplemented by work from federal state health ministries.
