Neurologically normal children of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) display complex learning disabilities in multiple academic domains compared with their peers.
Despite broadly normal intellectual functioning, ELBW children have significant risks for learning disabilities in written output, arithmetic and reading, in that order.
They are also more likely than full-term children to show learning disabilities in multiple academic domains, say investigators from the British Columbia Research Institute for Children’s and Women’s Health, the University of British Columbia and the Children’s and Women’s Health Centre in Vancouver.
Study participants were predominantly white and middle-class. The researchers point out increasing numbers of ELBW newborns are surviving because of recent medical advances. Few have severe sensory or motor impairments as sequelae.
They also suggest most babies born at a birth weight of 1000 grams or less who survive and who are not socially deprived, have intelligence within broadly defined average range in middle childhood: “While major functional impairments are most likely to be noticed relatively early in life, more subtle learning difficulties may not be detected until school entry or until academic demands increase as the child progresses through school.”
