New Bruise Pattern Scoring System Can Help In Child Abuse

By Harvey McConnell

A new scoring system for bruise patterns which could help identify children who may be abused has been devised by British clinicians.

Although the new scoring system would not replace history taking and examination, it can help in cases where the evidence is in doubt, declares Dr Jo Sibert and colleagues at the Department of Child Health, University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, Wales. The system could be added to current methods for deducing abuse.

Pediatricians are often asked for an opinion on whether a particular pattern of bruising is caused by abuse, the clinicians point out. Although some studies have looked at the age of children and bruising, and others have looked at the age of individual bruises, the evidence base for coming to a conclusion on an individual pattern of bruising is very limited.
