LONDON (Reuters Health) – People who are born in the second half of the year appear to be more likely to develop Crohn's disease in childhood or adolescence than people born in the first half, according to a report published in the October 20th issue of the British Medical Journal.
"If infectious agents potentially linked to Crohn's disease include some that are common at particular times of year, their seasonal variation might be reflected in the pattern of birth month in people with Crohn's disease," the investigators note.
Dr. Henrik T. Sרrensen, from Aarhus and Aalborg University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark, and colleagues analyzed Danish hospital registry data from 1977 to 1992 to determine the number of people diagnosed with Crohn's disease before 21 years of age. The birth month-based incidence of disease was calculated by determining the total number of births that occurred each month from 1957 to 1992.
The researchers identified 627 cases of Crohn's disease that were diagnosed between 1977 and 1992. The disease was more common among individuals born between July and December than in those born between January and June. The peak month was August and the trough month was March.
A similar study conducted by others in Britain failed to show the degree of seasonal variation identified in the current study, Dr. Sרrensen and associates note. However, they point out, they focused only on incident cases diagnosed early in life, which may explain the stronger seasonal effect noted in the current study. In addition, the incidence of Crohn's disease is much lower in Denmark than in Britain.
However, it is possible that causal factors for Crohn's disease differ between the two countries and that this may explain the different seasonal patterns observed, the authors remark.
