Bisphosphonate Therapy Also Benefits Adults With Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Italian researchers have found that bisphosphonate therapy provides clinical benefits to adults with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), just as it does with OI affected children.

 “Neridronate intravenous (IV) infusions, administered quarterly, significantly increase bone mineral density (BMD) and lowered the risk of clinical fracture in adults with OI,” they report. Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heritable disease of connective tissue characterised by increased bone fragility.

The researchers say that bisphosphonates appear to be the most promising therapy, at least in children. Therefore, they tested IV neridronate, an amino-bisphosphonate structurally similar to alendronate and pamidronate, in 23 men and 23 pre-menopausal women with OI.
